Introduction


KIST Medical College (KISTMC) established in the year 2006 is affiliated with Institute Of Medicine (IOM) under Tribhuvan University (TU) in the Kathmandu Valley. The College runs a 300 bedded hospital equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and every modern facility. The college also has well equipped lecture halls, seminar rooms and basic medical science practical laboratories as per the norms of Nepal Medical Council (NMC).The aim of KISTMC is to be a reputed medical college both at the national and international level by bringing together the best of the curriculum in a serene academic environment through the dedicated professional services of competent and committed faculty and staff. Their management is always committed to take the services of the internationally renowned faculties from within and outside the country, for medical education of the highest order.

Eligibility


Eligibility requirements for the MBBS course
To be eligible for selection to the undergraduate medical course (MBBS), a candidate should have completed 17 years of age and 10+2 years of education of intermediate science or equivalent with an aggregate of 50% marks in English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

Student selection procedure
The institution admits three categories of students. These are
i) Nepalese scholarship students
ii) Nepalese self-financing students and
iii) International students.

The Nepalese Scholarship students are selected through an entrance examination conducted by the Ministry of Education and Sports. 10% of total seats are reserved for students under this category as per Nepal Government rules.
The Nepalese self financing students are selected by the Student Selection Committee of KIST. Students who have qualified in the examination conducted by Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University can fill the application form available along with the prospectus at KISTMC after paying NRS 2000/- (Rs Two Thousand only). The student selection committee will have the final right to select students for the MBBS course at KISTMC.
The foreign students are selected on the basis of their twelfth standard marks and an interview conducted by the college. Prospectus and the application form are available from the Admissions office at Imadol. A separate merit list for foreign students will be drawn up. The selected candidates are admitted to the course after verification of the original documents and payment of fees.
The official timing is from 8 am to 4 pm from Sunday to Friday. Saturday is the weekly day off.

The MBBS curriculum outline
KIST follows the curriculum of the Institute of Medicine. The basic philosophy of the curriculum is student centred, community based and problem oriented.
The integrated basic medical sciences subjects which includes Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology & Pharmacology are tought during the first two years. During this period students are also exposed to the hospital setting for history taking skills. Students who do not clear the second year university examination even in the fourth attempt will have to leave the course.
The clinical subjects, which include General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Anesthesia, Dentistry, Radiodiagnosis, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Orthopedics etc., along with Forensic Medicine, are taught during the rest two and half years. The teaching/learning activites of Commuity Medicine starts from the first year and continues till the end of the course.
One year compulsory rotating internship is mandatory for all the graduates after passing their final MBBS examination.
The medium of instruction of the MBBS course is English.

Community-based learning
The college actively encourages and supports community-based learning (CBL). CBL is being actively promoted through community visits, postings to peripheral health institutions, long stays in rural communities and family visits. The institution actively promotes the development of a community orientation among the graduating doctors. The college plans to start satellite or outreach clinics to improve healthcare delivery in the periphery and for training of medical, nursing and other categories of students. A satellite hospital is functioning in Dolakha district. The college has worked out a medical insurance scheme, Sanjeevani for the residents of Imadol VDC and neighboring VDCs. The residents can avail of basic medical facilities in the hospital on payment of a nominal premium each year.

Evaluation


A system of continuous evaluation is followed through regular internal assessment. The internal assessments will account for 20% of total marks in the University examination. The University examinations will be conducted by Examination Division, Dean’s Office, Institute Of Medicine, Tribhuvan University.

Scholarship and fees


The Nepalese student selected by Ministry of Education & Sports (MOES), need not have to pay tuition fees. However, they have to pay other categories of fees. The tuition fee for the Nepalese self-financing students is Nepalese rupees (Nrs.)30 lac . Apart from tuition fee they also have to pay examination and other fees as per TU rules.
The tuition fee for the SAARC and Non resident Nepalese(NRN) students is Nrs. 50 lac (US $ 70,000). They will have to pay other fees as appropriate. Tuition fee for International students outside SAARC is Nrs. 75 lac (US$ 1,00,000). The fees can be paid through Demand Draft or wire transfer drawn in favor of KIST Medical College, Imadol, Kathmandu.In addition the students will have to pay examination fees, hostel fees, mess charges and other fees as applicable.
